Drafted into Stella One Eleven a couple of years back for her production
skills, Sydneysider Maynard?s solo career was temporarily put on hold.
Clearly she has used the extra writing time to full advantage. This self-produced
debut (she plays most of the instruments too) shows just how far Maynard
has come from being lowly bass-player with 90s indie hopefuls The Bughouse.
Radio fave "Jackie in the Morning" is an immediate highlight
with it?s brooding verses and defiant choruses but each successive song
(at least as far in as track five) has an equally killer hook. "Messiah" is
pretty and string-driven "Aurora Borealis" a minimal acoustic
lament, while "Trouble" displays her distinctive voice in all
its glory. The electronic tracks ("Fifteen Letter", "Catalyst")
seem to lack some of the same warmth and there?s a hint of under-editing,
but it?s pretty impressive nonetheless.
